Measurement and Instrumentation

NEMO offers optical characterization services with a wide range of benchmarked instrumentation

Measurement, characterisation and testing are key issues during design, production, assembly and field use of finished micro-optical components, systems and materials.

Recent tendency towards continuous miniaturisation and the corresponding increase in the density of integration is a challenge to the materials in use and elements/systems performance. Therefore it is of high importance to provide the proper experimental support that is able to deliver initial data and in-process tests for modelling, fast product development and product quality tests.

In the virtual Service centre for Measurement and Instrumentation 23 partners in NEMO combine their competences in instrumentation to characterize micro-optical materials, components and systems for NEMO partners and outside users.

The objectives of this Service centre are:

  • to collect and benchmark the different commercial and proprietary micro-optics measurement instruments and the associated analysis software for the characterization of micro-optical components and optical materials;
  • to identify the white spots in this field;
  • to develop novel measurement concepts and instrumentation for novel micro-optical characteristics and quantities.

The benchmarking activities assign the competences and measurement capabilities of each partner but also enable to discover today’s limitations. However the measurement facilities are continuously upgraded according to the needs defined by internal and external requests.

The virtual centre is already used within NEMO for the characterization of micro-optics. IUC Members can get access to the measurement capabilities described in the NEMO e-inventory and to the expertise of the different partners. Through the IUC they can contract development work or small series of measurements to all partners of the centre.
