Reliability

In the Service centre for Reliability 5 NEMO partners combine their competences in reliability assessments of micro-optical components and offer them to NEMO participants and to IUC Members. Different reliability assessment methods as well as a variety of computational and experimental characterisation tools are available.

The Service centre has the capability to conduct environmental testing according to a set of standards. Micro-structural analysis and optical measurements can also be provided for the identification of failure mechanisms. Statistical processing of the data can be performed for predicting the lifetime of selected micro-optical components.

The centre will provide support on the following topics (non-exhaustive list):

  • device performance studies through optical and electrical modelling and characterisation
  • accelerated lifetime tests of devices in a variety of conditions (including radiation testing)
  • influence of packaging on the device performance and lifetime
  • identification of failure mechanisms
  • estimation of failure rates
  • thermo mechanical characterization of materials in small dimensions
  • modelling of visco-elastic and plastic behaviour of materials
  • crack formation and embrittlement studies.

Reliability

The centre is already used within NEMO for investigating the reliability of structures consisting of thin metallic films on polymer substrates. Industry can contact the service centre for reliability through the IUC.
