Description

Maria Curie-Sklodowska University is situated in Lublin, in the eastern part of Poland and is consisted of 11 faculties. Laboratory of Optical Fibres technology belongs to the Faculty of Chemistry. The investigation in the field of optical fibres technology started in 1972 and, in the first stage, concerned optical fibres and cables for telecommunication. In 1979 the first optical fibre cable, manufactured in UMCS laboratories (attenuation about 4 dB/km, length 2.4 km) was incorporated into a telecommunication network in Lublin. This technology, elaborated in UMCS was put into practice in the factory of optical fibres and cables built in Lublin. Production of the second generation fibres in an industrial scale started in 1983. The Optical Fibres Research Group from UMCS was awarded State Award for the elaboration of polish technology of optical fibres for telecommunication.
After 1990, for economical reasons, the production of fibres for telecommunication was stopped and the interests of the Laboratory of Optical Fibres Technology changed to special fibres, mainly for sensing purposes. Currently the research of the Laboratory of Optical Fibres Technology is focused on the technology of microstructured fibres. Also the chemical optical fibre sensors (e.g. pH and cations ones) are investigated.
The laboratory is equipped with a complete technological line for the preform production and fibre drawing. The flexibility of this line allows to produce different kinds of fibres. The Laboratory of Optical Fibres UMCS is therefore a good candidate to research activities in NEMO, especially in "Micro-optical Structures for Sensing" program.
The Laboratory of Optical Fibres Technology organised successfully the Optical Fibres Technology curriculum in the Faculty of Chemistry UMCS. Every year ca 35 students participate in the courses. Laboratory is also active in the TEMPUS and SOCRATES/ERASMUS programmes so it is well prepared for such tasks of NEMO as "Education and training" and "Spreading of excellence".
