Description

The Wroclaw University of Technology (WRUT), consisting of 12 Faculties and having at present 32 thousand M.Sc., B.Sc., and Ph.D. students, is the second biggest technical university in Poland. The Fibre-Optic Group acts within the Institute of Physics, which in turn, together with the Institute of Mathematics, constitutes the Faculty of Fundamental Problems of Technology. The Fibre-Optic Group includes 2 professors, 4 researchers, 7 Ph.D students, and 2 technicians carrying out research in the areas of fibre-optic sensors, computer enhanced modelling of optical structures, and optical interferometry.
The Fibre-Optic Group is equipped with modelling software of different types, fibre-optic and interferometric instrumentation, and has access to optical and mechanical workshops being a part of the Institute of Physics. Current research interests of the Fibre-Optic Group are focused on modelling and characterization of microstructured fibres and their applications for sensing purposes, and also on applications of optical vortices in interferometric measurements. It makes the Fibre-Optic Group a good candidate to contribute to centres of "Modelling and Design" and "Measurement and Instrumentation" providing services and technology to all NEMO participants. The Fibre-Optic group wishes also to participate actively in those research activities within NEMO, which are focused on "Micro-Optical Structures for Sensing”.
Several members of the Fibre-Optic Group for many years have organized the exchange of students between The Faculty of Fundamental Problems of Technology, WRUT and other European Universities in the framework of TEMPUS and ERASMUS/ SOCRATES programs. The Fibre-Optic Group will transfer the expertise gained during the student exchange projects to the activities within NEMO focused on "education and training", "dissemination of knowledge", and on "spreading of excellence".
