Description

Chalmers University of Technology (Chalmers tekniska högskola, CTH) is situated in Göteborg and is the second largest technical university in Sweden with some 8000 students. The Photonics Laboratory has 30 researchers and is part of the MC2 microtechnology center at Chalmers with a new 1000 m2 cleanroom facility for microfabrication equipped with, e.g., two electron beam lithographs.
The Photonics Laboratory is leading in the design, fabrication and replication of diffractive microoptics. Moreover, it’s semiconductor optics research is of the highest standing and has currently reported record high single mode power from surface micromachined vertical cavity lasers (VCSELs). Further, the Photonics Laboratory has an increasingly active MEMS group that closely cooperates with an in-campus industrial institute for microfabrication and packaging. Finally, there is also strong research on microwave photonics. With this broad spectrum we intend to play a role in many of the NEMO activities, but as far as the application is concerned, we are participating in the MEMS program.
The Photonics Laboratory is cooperating with many universities worldwide, with some emphasis on Northern and Eastern Europe. We have close ties to the photonics industry, in particular on a national level. We have by far the most extensive undergraduate Photonics program in Sweden and therefore photonics specialists in most companies have had their eduaction and training by us. In this way we have a large, yet intimate, network with the industry. We therefore have already a very efficient infrastructure for "Spreading new knowledge and excellence" in microoptics.
