Description
Heriot-Watt University is a modern research-led University with around 6000 students in its two campuses and over 9500 students on its distant learning courses. With a faculty of around 20-30 Research Associates, over 40 Ph.D. and around 200 masters and undergraduate students, Physics department, School of Engineering and Physical Sciences, has been at forefront of research and teaching of Photonics, in the UK for the past 30 years. The average annual research grants from European, national governmental and industrial sources exceed £3,000,000.00.
Physics department has been one of world’s leading groups in the areas of optical computing, optical interconnects, semiconductor materials, industrial laser applications, fibre optics sensors, ultrafast and nano optics research.
Over that past 30 years, the Physics department has hosted numerous international conferences and summer schools in the above topics including the Optical Computing summer school in 1988, EQEC in 1991, II-VI Materials and HPL/GPL conferences in 1995 and 1996 respectively.
